Poor dietary choices and inadequate hydration are significant contributors to the development of kidney stones. Discover effective prevention strategies below.

There has been a concerning increase in kidney stone cases among young adults, a trend previously more common in older individuals but now affecting Gen Zs and Millennials. Studies indicate a higher prevalence of kidney stones among adults aged 20 to 40. To shed light on this issue, Healthonlyforyou spoke with Dr. Ayan Kumar Dey, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at P. D. Hinduja Hospital and MRC in Mahim, Mumbai.
Dr. Kumar attributes the rise in kidney stone cases among young adults to the widespread availability of fast-food options coupled with a decrease in water consumption. The inclination towards experimenting with new foods amidst the pressures of modern life exacerbates this trend, leading to kidney conditions at a younger age.
Factors Leading to the Surge in Kidney Stone Incidences Among Young Adults
Dr. Kumar outlined several common factors contributing to the formation of kidney stones, including family history and poor dietary habits.
1. Genetic Factors
Dr. Kumar highlighted that a genetic predisposition or shared lifestyle and dietary habits within families can significantly elevate the risk of developing kidney stones.
2. Unprescribed Medication
Dr. Kumar emphasized that the deliberate use of over-the-counter medications, especially vitamin C tablets, without appropriate medical supervision is another significant factor contributing to the development of kidney stones. He noted, “This problem became particularly apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic when individuals resorted to self-prescribed vitamin C regimens without seeking advice from healthcare professionals.”
3. Unhealthy Diet
Consumption of foods high in sodium, commonly found in processed and fast food, plays a significant role in the formation of kidney stones. These dietary habits, coupled with inadequate water intake, further increase the risk of developing kidney stones.
4. Urinary Tract Infections and Other Renal Issues
Individuals who have previously experienced urinary tract infections (UTIs) or kidney stones, whether during childhood or later in life, as well as those with pre-existing kidney conditions, face an elevated likelihood of developing kidney stones.
Dos and Don’ts for Kidney Stone Prevention
Dr. Kumar provided valuable insights on preventing the increasing prevalence of kidney conditions:
1. Reduce sodium intake in your diet.
2. Refrain from self-medicating with over-the-counter drugs; consult a doctor instead.
3. Increase your fluid intake, particularly water.
4. Include foods rich in calcium in your diet.
5. Limit meat consumption.
6. Steer clear of foods high in oxalates.
7. Stay alert for signs and symptoms of kidney stones and seek medical evaluation.
8. Schedule regular follow-ups with a kidney specialist or nephrologist, especially if symptoms arise.
9. Maintain a healthy lifestyle overall.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Dr. Kumar emphasized, “The increasing incidence of kidney stones among young adults underscores the necessity of addressing contributing factors and taking proactive steps to safeguard renal health. Through raising awareness, promoting prudent medication practices, advocating dietary modifications, and emphasizing adequate hydration, individuals can effectively reduce the risk of kidney stone formation and enhance their overall health and well-being.”
