What is Depression in Men?

Depression does not diminish a man’s masculinity or emotional well-being; it is a condition that can affect men of any age, race, or background. However, untreated depression can lead to serious medical problems, including heart disease. While it’s normal to occasionally feel low or experience mood dips, persistent feelings of despair that interfere with daily life may indicate depression.

Men often find it challenging to express their feelings, which can result in depression being overlooked. Instead, focus may shift to physical symptoms like back pain, headaches, sleep disturbances, or sexual problems. However, untreated depression can have severe consequences, with men being four times more likely than women to die by suicide. Therefore, it’s crucial for men to share their feelings and seek help before reaching a point of crisis.

Symptoms of Depression in Men

Men often experience depression differently than women. While depression in men can manifest as sadness and social withdrawal, they may also exhibit other symptoms such as irritability, aggression, compulsive working, binge drinking, or engaging in risky behaviors. Additionally, men may be less likely to recognize their symptoms compared to women due to a tendency to deny their feelings.
