Dandruff, an inflammatory skin condition, results in the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp, noticeable as flakes on the scalp and clothing when clumped together due to surface debris and oil. It is medically termed seborrheic dermatitis and typically manifests with scalp redness. Though the dry flakes are harmless, they may cause scalp itchiness. Contrary to common belief, dandruff isn’t linked to hair hygiene but rather to scalp skin.
The rapid growth and shedding of scalp skin cells lead to dandruff, with unclear causative factors according to health research. Some suggest the fungus malassezia, residing on the scalp, might play a role, while others propose an immune system overreaction to this fungus.
Seborrheic dermatitis, also a significant cause of dandruff, can affect areas beyond the scalp, such as the ears and face. Stress levels can exacerbate dandruff, with symptoms worsening under high stress. Additionally, cold, dry winter weather is known to contribute to dandruff.
Management of dandruff is feasible. Mild cases often require only daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser, while severe cases may benefit from medicated shampoos.
