What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya fever is a viral illness transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is active during the day. While typically not life-threatening, it can lead to significant morbidity. Symptoms include fever, rashes, and in some cases, severe and occasionally persistent joint pain (arthritis). The joint pain can be debilitating and may cause a stooped posture in affected individuals.

Symptoms

Chikungunya fever shares similarities with dengue fever in terms of symptoms. Typically, symptoms of chikungunya fever manifest around 2-4 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The primary symptom is the rapid onset of severe joint pains, which can be debilitating and migrate throughout multiple joints (polyarticular arthritis). These joint pains may be accompanied by muscle pain, high-grade fever, conjunctivitis, and a rash. The joint pain results from the virus invading the joint cartilage and causing inflammation. A macular or maculopapular rash, often appearing between 2 to 5 days after infection, is commonly observed, predominantly on the trunk and limbs. Additionally, some patients may experience conjunctivitis (eye infection) and minor bleeding in the skin and eye.

Treatment

Chikungunya is typically self-limiting, meaning it resolves on its own over time, with most patients recovering gradually. Drinking plenty of water, getting adequate rest, and engaging in mild exercises can help alleviate pain and discomfort. However, there is currently no specific vaccine or prescribed treatment for chikungunya by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In allopathic medicine, common pain relievers such as aspirin, combiflam, ibuprofen, and paracetamol are often used to alleviate associated pain and fever. While the infection is rarely life-threatening, it can still lead to significant morbidity, including prolonged fatigue lasting several weeks and joint pain persisting for months or even years. Notably, the prolonged joint pain characteristic of chikungunya fever is typically not observed in dengue cases, and the hemorrhagic symptoms typical of dengue fever are not present in chikungunya virus infection.
