Causes and Prevention of Diaper Rash in Infants
Diaper rash, a common skin irritation in babies, arises from various factors.
Causes:
- Prolonged exposure to moisture and irritants in urine and feces
- Friction from diapers and wipes
- Chemical irritants in detergents, perfumes, and dyes
- Sensitivity to certain soaps and creams
Types:
- Chafing Dermatitis: Redness and puffiness due to prolonged contact with soiled or wet diapers.
- Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema): Scaly, red patches caused by allergens, irritants, or environmental factors.
- Candidal Dermatitis (Yeast Infection): Red, dot-like spots that merge into a bright red rash in areas with skin folds. Often triggered by medication or antibiotics.
Prevention:
- Expose the diaper area to fresh air regularly.
- Keep the area clean and dry by changing diapers frequently.
- Avoid harsh detergents and use gentle, fragrance-free wipes.
- Monitor the baby’s diet and identify any potential irritants.
