What is Incontinentia Pigmenti
Incontinentia pigmenti is a condition that primarily affects body systems, particularly the skin. It is more prevalent in males than in females. The condition is characterized by evolving skin abnormalities throughout childhood and young adulthood. Infants with the condition typically exhibit a blistering rash at birth or in early infancy, which heals over time and is succeeded by the development of wart-like skin growths. During early childhood, the skin may develop grey or brown patches arranged in a swirled pattern.
What is the prevalence of Incontinentia Pigmenti
Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare condition, with between 900 and 1200 cases reported in scientific literature thus far. The majority of affected individuals have been females, with several dozen cases reported in males.
Outlook for Incontinentia Pigmenti
Skin abnormalities typically exhibit a tendency to relapse and occasionally may completely disappear, but residual neurological challenges can persist.
