Glaucoma, a severe eye ailment, damages the optic nerve responsible for transmitting visual data from the eye to the brain. Left untreated, it can lead to blindness, often resulting from fluid accumulation in the eye’s front portion, elevating pressure and causing optic nerve damage.

According to a study, India bears a significant glaucoma burden, with 11.9 million affected and 8.9 million experiencing blindness, contributing to 12.8% of the country’s blindness. World Glaucoma Week, observed from March 10 to March 16, aims to raise awareness of this condition.

In an interview with OnlyMyHealth, Dr. Raksha J Vaishnav, Senior Consultant – Glaucoma and Cataract at Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore, provided insights into dietary strategies for glaucoma prevention and improved vision.

Dr. Vaishnav emphasized that while there’s no cure for glaucoma, early detection and treatment can mitigate its progression and prevent further eye damage. In response to how to prevent glaucoma, Dr. Vaishnav highlighted the importance of regular eye checkups, prescribed treatments, and maintaining a healthy diet in safeguarding eyesight and enhancing vision.

Superfoods for Preventing Glaucoma and Enhancing Vision

In collaboration with Dr. Vaishnav, we’ve compiled a list of 5 superfoods to aid in preventing glaucoma and supporting overall eye health.

He mentioned, “Nuts and seeds such as almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are packed with vitamin E, essential for preserving eye health.” This vitamin plays a crucial role in shielding cells from oxidative stress-induced damage and can potentially decelerate the advancement of cataracts, another prevalent cause of vision impairment.

Moreover, it plays a significant role in the development and functionality of the retina, a vital component of the eye.”


Dr. Vaishnav advised that in addition to incorporating the aforementioned superfoods into your diet, it’s crucial to limit the consumption of processed and high-fat foods. These types of foods can elevate the risk of developing conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, which are associated with glaucoma. He stated, “While there’s no foolproof method to prevent glaucoma, integrating these superfoods into your diet can aid in maintaining optimal eye health and reducing the likelihood of developing this sight-threatening disease. Coupled with regular eye examinations and prescribed treatments, a nutritious and well-balanced diet can significantly contribute to preserving your eyesight and enhancing your overall quality of life.”
